Drilling fluid can be simply defined as that combination of fluid and solids required in certain drilling processes to facilitate the production and removal of cuttings from a borehole. Commonly, and especially in the field, liquid drilling fluids are referred to as mud. Although in one sense the properties and use of drilling fluid can be considered construction techniques, they are also relevant to well design, logging, completion, and development. For these reasons this important subject is considered here.

This technology restricts drilling fluid additives to those compatible with potable water, which eliminates many used with oil well or other applications. Of great significance is the fact that though the cost of drilling fluid is very small in comparison to the cost of a well installation, a well-designed mud program is vital to the successful completion of an efficient well.
